Can you recommend a top quality hotel with fine dining (or near to a good restaurant) in south west england (no more than about an hour and a half from Bristol - so north Devon, somerset, wiltshire, glos, north dorset).

I second Bovey Castle. Fantastic Hotel in the middle of Dartmoor surrounded by beautiful scenery. The food is top notch too and they have a spa. Bovey Castle also have a their own private boat that can be charted for day trips and they provide a picnic hamper.
Also look at the Royal Crescent in Bath. Small intimate Luxury 5 star with a great spa in the historic royal crescent.What are the best romantic hotel/restaurants in south West England?

I agree about Gidley Park in Chagford. We had a cream tea there recently - very special. If that's a little too expensive, I can recommend Prince Hall Hotel on Dartmoor - a intimate family run hotel in fantastic surroundings.
